IPKenya came across this photo by Robert Kilonzi. Mr. Kilonzi has rightly noticed an uncanny resemblance between two logos: the logo above is that of Ubuntu by Canonical Ltd. and the logo below is that of Friends of Raila Odinga (FORA) Kenya. The Ubuntu word and associated logos including the logo in question,’The Circle of Friends’, are registered trademarks of Canonical Ltd.

FORA KENYA is a membership organisation that supports the presidential candidature of Raila Odinga (current Prime Minister) in the 2013 General Elections in Kenya.

In the absence of any other information on this matter, IPKenya is wondering:
1. Does Ubuntu’s Trademark policy (the policy) allow FORA to use the Ubuntu trade mark without any specific permission?
2. Does FORA’s use of Ubuntu trademark amount to restricted use that requires a trademark license as per the policy?
3. Has FORA made any attempts to get permission from Ubuntu to use the Circle of Friends (CoF) logo?
IPKenya is surprised that politicians and political parties seem not to take matters of intellectual property seriously as they engage in their politicking and campaigns. Wont be long before the chickens come home to roost!
Good observation Vic, Kindly share any more information you come across. Seems like an interesting duel brewing.
Thanks Viola. Let’s see how this develops.
Am a new user and lover of Ubuntu Linux. The Fora people should just change their logo and replace it with an “O”. Stop degrading ubuntu….!!!
